CORN & CALLOSITIES

Corn is a firm, dry tender extension of the skin surface commonly caused by pressure due to unyielding structures of the foot.

There are Two varieties
Hard Corns
  • Hard corn comes mostly on outer side of the 5th toe.
Soft Corns
  • Soft corn is in between the toes.
Common Causes
Collapse of the Horizontal Foot Arches Due to

Fatigue and associated weakness of the muscles

Arthritis especially Rheumatoid arthritis

Hallux Valgus leading to abnormal loading of the foot

Injury

Flat feet

Less Common Causes

Polio foot

Disc lesion leading to muscle weakness resulting in collapse of the arches

Disorders like myelo-meningocele

Treatment of Corns

Establish the primary cause and treat it.

Shoes with moulded insoles and pads for relief of press.

Management of corn proper

  • Take medical advice / do not cut at home
  • Metatarsal bar in shoes

Surgical intervention & removal.

Prevention

Avoid narrow / tight foot wear

Avoid high heels

Complications

Pus formation
