FOR FAILED ACETABULAR FRACTURE

A badly fractured socket, when leads to painful joint, due to secondary arthritis, hip joint replacement restores movements and eliminates pain. May require additional support with metal ring.

A young male sustained right acetabulum fracture in a vehicular accident. This fracture could not be treated surgically due to other associated injuries. Due to this, the fracture healed in unacceptable position. When he came to us, the head of femur was deformed and was centrally dislocated. During surgery, the deformed head was excised and used as a bone graft between the broken socket and the metal ring. The plastic cup part of the total hip was placed within the metal ring, and fixed to it with bone cement. The femoral head reconstruction was done using standard total hip component.

X-ray before operation showing totally destroyed acetabular socket with central dislocation of the femoral head which is deformed.
