GENERAL INFORMATION IN INTRA ARTICULAR FRACTURES IN CHILDREN

The physis or the growth plate is situated at the ends of the bone and may be damaged during the injury. This may result in future growth abnormalities like shortening, angulation or rotation.

Hence intra articular injuries in children have to be managed aggressively and prognosis explained to the parents. A proper record of injury and treatment must be maintained to avoid litigation, if any deformity develops at later date.

In children, since ends of long bones are mostly cartilaginous, The size of the fragment may appear smaller than the actual on an x-ray, leading to erroneous judgement about the displacement and later complications.

These injuries are classified according to classification by Salter and Harris.
