FRACTURES OF THE LOWER END FEMUR
Classification

They are classified as Unicondylar fractures, bicondylar fractures, T & Y fractures

Special X - Rays

Standard A.P.,lateral and oblique views give adequate information. C.T. scan is rarely required.

Non Operative Treatment

Rarely successful in displaced intra articular fractures

Operative Treatment

Open reduction and internal fixation using principles laid down by A.O. is carried out. Interfragmentary lag screws are used to fix the condyles. This may be supplemented with condylar plate or Dynamic condylar screw and plate as a support device to fix the supracondylar element of the fracture.

Early passive mobilisation, using CPM helps in getting good range of knee movements.

Results depend on associated ligament injuries and vascularity of small articular fragments.

Complications

Knee stiffness due to Quadriceps Adhesions, Mal Alignment of Knee Axis.
