FRACTURE NECK OF FEMUR

Neck of Femur in elderly

When an old individual has a fall, injuring his hipbone, the chances of having a fracture through the neck of Femur bone is very high

These fractures are of two varieties;

  • Transcervical fracture
  • Intertrochanteric fracture

Both the variety are best treated surgically to avoid complications associated with these fractures viz:

  • Bed sores
  • Hypostatic pneumonia
  • Urinary infection
  • Constipation

The surgery is carried out under epidural anaesthesia, which is safe in the elderly.

For the transcervical variety of fracture, hemi arthroplasty or Total hip replacement is the surgery of choice. For Intertrochanteric variety, fixation with sliding hip implant is the surgery of choice.
