- Rickets
is a condition which causes softening of bones.
- It is
common in children.
- It
is due to lack of vitamin D. Rarely it may be due to kidney disorders,
or disorders of digestive system.
- Though
it is common in undernourished children, it may be found in child
of affluent families as well.
- Common
symptoms are irritable and lethargic child, with bone pains and repeated
cough and colds.
- The
ends of long bones are swollen, the ribs may show swellings, the head
may appear big and the child has stooping back.
- Some
times the knees may show deformity like Knock knees.
- Examination
by a specialist establishes the diagnosis.
- X-ray
are characteristic.
- Treatment
consists of supplementing diet with adequate vitamin D and calcium.
