RICKETS
  • Rickets is a condition which causes softening of bones.
  • It is common in children.
  • It is due to lack of vitamin D. Rarely it may be due to kidney disorders, or disorders of digestive system.
  • Though it is common in undernourished children, it may be found in child of affluent families as well.
  • Common symptoms are irritable and lethargic child, with bone pains and repeated cough and colds.
  • The ends of long bones are swollen, the ribs may show swellings, the head may appear big and the child has stooping back.
  • Some times the knees may show deformity like Knock knees.
  • Examination by a specialist establishes the diagnosis.
  • X-ray are characteristic.
  • Treatment consists of supplementing diet with adequate vitamin D and calcium.
